Description

She scratches it. Then she sleeps in it.

Most cat beds ask your cat to do one thing: lie down. The problem is that a cat does not choose a spot because it is soft. She chooses it because it feels right under her claws, because it holds her scent, and because it sits where she wants to be.

This basket is woven by hand from tightly coiled natural cotton rope. The coils give her claws something to catch, which is why cats work the rim the way they work the arm of a sofa. The base is deep and padded, so once she has claimed the surface, she settles into it.

That is the whole idea. A texture she chooses herself, in a shape she wants to sleep in.

Why natural rope

Synthetic fibre baskets are coated, and that coating carries a smell your cat notices long before you do. It is also slick, so there is nothing for her claws to grip. We use natural cotton rope with no plastic coating and no chemical treatment. It softens with use rather than fraying, and after a week or two it starts to carry her scent, which is what turns a new object into her spot.

Two sizes

42cm Regular fits most cats up to around 6kg, the ones who curl up tight to sleep.

48cm Large suits bigger breeds, long haired cats, cats who like to sprawl with a leg hanging over the edge, and households where two cats end up sharing.

If your cat is between sizes, take the larger one. Cats rarely complain about extra room.

Care

Lift out the cushion and machine wash it cold. Spot clean the rope with a damp cloth and let it air dry fully. Vacuum the weave with a brush attachment now and then to lift out fur. Keep it out of direct sun for long periods so the natural fibre keeps its colour.

What to expect

Every basket is woven by hand, so no two are identical. Small variations in the weave and slight differences in tone are normal and are part of how it is made.

Some cats climb in within minutes. Others circle it for a few days first. If yours takes her time, put the basket where she already sleeps rather than where you would like her to, and leave a blanket she has used inside it. It usually does the rest.

Why Customers And Their Cats Love it

  • Took three days, then it was theirs

    ★★★★★

"Bought this after my girls ignored two beds and a scratching post that cost more than this did. They sniffed it, walked off, and I thought here we go again. Third morning I came down and they were flat out in it with a paw over the side, and they've been in it every day since. Wish I'd skipped the other stuff and started here."

    Rachel M.

  • Good, but size up if your cat is a chonk

    ★★★★★

"Ordered the 42cm for my boy who is, let's be honest, a bit of a unit at 6.5kg. He fits but only just, and he can't stretch out the way he likes. Completely my fault, the size guide did say to go bigger, I just didn't believe it. Ordering the 48cm now and the small one goes to the other cat."

    Tom H.

  • Actually looks like it belongs in my living room

    ★★★★★

"I've spent years hiding ugly beige cat stuff behind the sofa so this was a nice change. It sits next to the plant in the front room and two people have asked where the basket was from before spotting the cat asleep in it. She does go at the rim with her claws which I think is the point, and it's held up fine so far."

Frequently asked questions

FAQ

What if my cat ignores it?

Some cats climb in within minutes, others circle it for a few days first. If yours takes her time, put the basket where she already sleeps rather than where you would like her to, and leave a blanket or jumper she has used inside it. That usually settles it. If she still has not claimed it after 30 nights, contact us and we will refund you in full. You keep the basket or pass it on to a local shelter.

Which size should I get?

The 42cm Regular fits most cats up to around 6kg, the ones who curl up tight to sleep. The 48cm Large suits bigger breeds, long haired cats, cats who sprawl with a leg over the edge, and households where two cats end up sharing. If your cat is between sizes, take the larger one. Cats rarely complain about extra room.

Will she wreck it?

The rope is meant to be scratched, that is the point of the weave. Normal scratching compacts the coils rather than pulling them apart, and the basket softens with use. A cat who chews rather than scratches is a different matter, and no woven product will survive that. If yours is a committed chewer, this is not the right bed for her.

Will this stop her scratching the sofa?

It gives her a surface she is more likely to choose, in a spot she already wants to be, which is how redirection works. It is not a guarantee. Cats scratch in multiple places and usually keep at least one favourite. Placing the basket near the furniture she currently targets gives you the best chance.

Does it replace nail clipping?

No. Scratching helps her shed the worn outer layer of her claws, which is why cats seek out the right texture, but it does not shorten claws the way clipping does. Keep up your normal nail care routine, especially with older cats.

What is it made of?

Handwoven natural cotton rope with no plastic coating and no chemical treatment, with a removable padded cushion in the base. Because every basket is woven by hand, small variations in the weave and slight differences in tone are normal.

Does it smell?

No. Synthetic fibre baskets are coated and carry a smell cats notice long before we do. Natural cotton rope does not. Some baskets have a faint clean cotton scent on arrival that fades within a day or two.

How do I clean it?

Spot clean the rope with a damp cloth and let it air dry fully before she uses it again. Vacuum the weave with a brush attachment now and then to lift out fur. Keep it out of long spells of direct sun so the natural fibre holds its colour.

Is it suitable for kittens or older cats?

Yes to both. The rim is low enough for a senior cat to step into without jumping, which matters if she is stiff in the mornings, and it keeps her off a cold floor. Kittens tend to take to it immediately.

Can two cats share one?

Two smaller cats often squeeze into the 48cm together. Most multi-cat households do better with one each, since the appeal is partly that the basket carries her own scent. That is why we offer 10% off two.

Straight in, no hesitation, hasn't moved since. Only annoyance is I now can't sit in that corner without disturbing her.

He goes at the rim every morning and it's not budged or frayed. Feels like it'll outlast the sofa he used to shred.

Basket itself is lovely and she sleeps in it every night, but the pad in the bottom is thinner than I expected. Folded a small blanket in there and now it's perfect.

Two cats, one basket, endless bickering. Ordered another and peace has been restored in the front room.

Last one I bought reeked of plastic for a fortnight and she wouldn't go near it. This one had a faint clean cotton smell for a day and that was it.

Ignored it for nearly a week and I did wonder. Moved it next to the radiator where she already napped and she was in it that afternoon.

Went for the large after reading the size guide and glad I did, he can stretch right out. Arrived in two days as well.

She's fourteen and getting stiff, so the low sides mean she can just step in rather than jump. Off the cold floor and much happier for it.
